World Cancer Day

4 February 2014

Under the slogan “Discrediting the Myths”, today February 4th is celebrated the World Cancer Day 2014. This year is focused on four key myths about cancer, and offers a chance to show with facts, data and evidence that these myths are not true.

World Cancer Day is an opportunity to elevate the collective voices in the name of knowledge enhancement about cancer in general and show misconceptions about the disease. Again, Borges is added to this cause in the name of knowledge enhancement about cancer in general.

From a global level, the messages are focused on the following four myths:

Myth 1: NOT TO TALK ABOUT CANCER

Reality: Cancer can be a difficult issue to deal with, especially in some cultures and environments. However openly tackle the disease may improve the results at individual, community and policy level.

Myth 2: THERE AREN’T NEITHER SIGNS NOR SYMPTOMS OF CANCER

Reality: For many types of cancer, there are warning signs and symptoms, and the benefits of early detection are indisputable.

Myth 3: THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT CANCER

Reality: One-third of the most common types of cancer can be prevented with correct strategies and can be done a lot at individual, community and policy level.

Myth 4: I HAVE NO RIGHT TO RECEIVE HEALTH CARE FOR CANCER

Reality: Everybody is entitled to access on equal terms to effective and proven treatment and care services for cancer to avoid suffering.
